Beginner Polo Lessons (currently only privates offered)
Beginner lessons are adjusted to the student's riding ability. If the student is an experienced rider, more time will be spent learning to hit the ball and on other polo skills and game rules. If the student is a beginner rider, more time will be spent learning quick stops, turns, and acceleration on the horse. For each lesson, we warm up the polo horses and get accustom to riding them around the arena with our polo mallets in hand. We spend several practices learning to hit the ball forward and backwards on both sides of the horse, how to accelerate and stop quickly, and how to make contact safely with an opponent’s horse to bump them out of the way. After a month or more of mastering these polo skills, we learn the rules of the game and scrimmage against each other. For private lessons, the horse is tacked up for you.
Intermediate/ Advanced Polo Lessons
After 4 or more weeks in the beginner lessons, a student may join the intermediate practices to scrimmage with more experienced polo school members. Intermediate practices are a fun and relaxed practice where we warm the horses up around the arena, practice hitting the ball for about 10 minutes, then form teams to play chukkers against each other. Intermediate practices give new polo payers a chance to learn team plays. Intermediate practices host slow and faster chukkers to accommodate all levels of polo. For group lessons, students tack up their assigned horse.
Addicted to the Sport?
Many polo school members are interested in taking their polo skills to the advanced level. Polo School members are welcome to join the Capitol Polo Club through a special introductory reduced dues rate. Members must provide their own or leased horses to play in club practices. Not interested in making the leap? Polo School members can continue practicing with the Polo School for as long as they wish.
