Owning a Polo Horse

Horse Expenses

For the beginner, one or two horses is enough. Four chukker games are common at many clubs. An older, experienced horse (what the beginner needs) can be purchased for between $3,000 and $5,000. A horse will require shoeing every 4 to 6 weeks at a cost from $60 to $80, and vet bills usually range from $300 to $500 annually for de-worming and vaccinations. Boarding bills range from $250 to $450 per month depending on stall or field board at Encanto Stables in the Capitol Polo Club.

Want your horse to earn money for you? Polo horses may be rented to the Polo School for lessons at $30/lesson.

Polo Equipment

For the horse: saddle, girth, bridle, polo wraps, and saddle pad. For the player: helmet, boots, knee pads, polo mallets, spurs, and whip.
